Midnight on the Mountain Top
This fun piece was a happy accident. I was attempting to work with a technique called "Marriage of Metals" that just didn't go right. In a moment of frustration I thought I would show the silver and gave it a nice blast of heat melting it....I told you I was going to show that silver who was boss.
I continued to melt and move the silver until you see the main blob of it here. I studied the piece a bit to see what it would become and I thought it looked a bit like a mountain. I began to play with that thought and came up with this pendent. I cut out a tear drop shaped back place, soldered on a 14 ga ring. Then I shaped and the mountain, cut out a little moon and soldered both onto the frame and backplate. I filed and filed and filed until my fingers were way beyond sore and the pendant had a good shape. I then formed the bail by bending the top of the tear drop to the back. I added the shadowy patina by applying LOS, rubbing it off in certain areas and going back to apply a little more to the mountain. The mountain actually has highlights of red, gold and brown throughout.
The mountain shape floats above the backplate making this piece 3 dimensional. It is really neat, full of texture and shadows. It is only 1" x 1".
