Liberation

I have just finished a piece that is due today. It is part of an assignment that was given to me at the end of the semester. My instructor has curated a show that will travel to a couple of different galleries. Starting this week it has come to the Mary Meyers School Of Art Gallery. A few of us were selected and asked to make a piece while it is here in the Akron area. I was one of those asked to participate. We were given a bag of pearls (Freshwater and fake) and asked to make something desirable with them. The name of the show is Desire. I have used only 6 of the pearls given to me. This piece has taken FOREVER to make. I had to hit the drawing board again several times during the making of it. I was wondering if I would actually ever get this piece done. It is made with Copper, Sterling Silver and Fresh Water Pearls.

Each link started out as a soldered sterling silver ring. I wrapped each one with copper wire while trapping one pearl within each one. I cut out  8 - 1" circles and punched a hole in each one of them to create a window effect. Each ring was then assembled and stitched together, again with copper wire. I used SOOOO much copper wire on this piece. It is really heavy as well. The coper sheet used is 20 Gauge.

I really like the look of this piece and may make some more along the lines. Although I highly doubt I will make anything like this one again. It took me 2 solid days just to make this one. My fingers still aren't back to normal this morning.

As always, comments and any feed back is greatly appreciated.

THANKS!!!!

Thank you Kim. That is very kind. The summer has been so much fun. I am really enjoying my studio. This piece was a challenge to come up with, but I am very happy with the end result.

      Thanks again!

Melissa, this is a beautiful piece, and I can really imagine it being reproduced in sterling and gold for sale in those high end stores. Though I like it better in copper myself; it has almost an industrial look to it mixed with the fashion, the blend of 2 worlds. I am going to follow your site and watch your creativity.

I only wish that I was closer to you than California to be able to take a class. But since I like where I live, I'll just have to see if we meet somewhere in the future.

      Carlotta,
Thank you for the great compliments. This piece is so much fun. I really enjoyed it. I could also see it in gold and silver. Now if only I could actually afford to buy gold. HA! I think it will be a long time before that happens. If you continue to keep tabs on my creativity, I would really appreciate continued feedback. It is always nice to hear what someone has to say. I also really just enjoy knowing that someone is actually looking at my blog.

I wish you were closer too. If you ever visit Ohio, just let me know. We may be making a trip to Cali next spring. I will let you know if it happens. A meet up would be GREAT!

Thanks, the piece is a lot of fun to wear! It really is quite heavy, but I kind of like it that way.

Hi Melissa, I love your necklace. I have been using copper for about 2 years now and love it. Sure wish you were closer to NC as I would certainly take a class/es from you. I should have gone to the retreats, as I'm less than 3 hours from Lake Gaston. Depending on where it will be in 2009, I may sign up for it and hope you will be there and teaching. Oh yes, I LOVE all your jewelry. You certainly are a very talented person. And, your daughters are adorable and may be following in your footsteps?

I have a couple websites, but not showing them now, as I am trying to finda better type site.

      Hi Charlotte,

Thank you! I wish I lived closer too. I have really only been playing with Copper for the last year and a half, but it sure is fun. I am not sure if I will be attending the retreat this year. I am taking my first ever really big trip and all my money is GONE GONE GONE! But you would still LOVE the retreat. The ladies there are a HOOT!

Thanks for the compliments on my work and daughters. It is still so strange to me to have found this hidden talent. I would have never thought, not even in a million years, that I would be making jewelry. It is so much fun and I have a total passion for it. I am so glad that I have a husband that is so supportive.

I can't wait to see some of your sites and work. Please let me know when you are ready to show them.
