Featured Artist Friday - Sonseeahray Scott

I received a few responses to my request to do a Featured Artist section on my blog. Sonny was the first one to respond. I had meant to get these started much sooner than this, but as you all know, little things happened and I haven't been to my computer much lately. I have had the honor of being a featured artist on a couple of blogs in the past and they are such a great way to get to know about other artists and their work. It is particularly fun to see how their studios are set up.

If you would like to be a featured artist, just let me know and I will send you the information. Shoot me an email at: melissa@kcjewelbox.com .

With that said, let's get to know Sonny!

Do you have a dedicated studio/artistic space? No

Is it a large or small space? What I have very, very small and mobile.

What medium(s) do you work in? Do you have a separate area for each?
I mostly work with wire. I do some sewing but I prefer wire. It is my passion. I have done watercolor work in the past...but I need complete peace and quiet for that, which right now...I do not have.

What one word would you use to describe your studio?
Nonexistent. I basically have my supplies "organized" into storage containers which I pull out when I am ready to work. Whatever I decide to use that evening goes onto a heavy tray which I sit on my lap. It's mobile so I can go anywhere to create. Which works for me.

What would you change if you could?

I would have a real studio.....

Can you share an organizational tip?
Do your paperwork at the end of the month...religiously. Unfortunately for me, I have extreme difficulty following my own advice.

Describe the usual state of your work table?
Organized chaos.

Do you have an idea wall or inspiration board?
No, but I do keep a box of sketches, books and magazines that inspire me on a nearby shelf. I get most of my inspiration from past civilizations and other cultures. I am a very visual person, so I pull ideas from pictures in history books and I do a lot of online research. I am constantly glued to PBS and the History channel.
A trip a museum for me is like eating cookies for breakfast, it's complete bliss.

After I see something, it usually sparks inspiration right away. If I do not have the time to start the project, I draw the inspired idea onto the nearest scrap of paper. As you can imagine, many used envelopes and old grocery receipts have been sacrificed to art. If I have the time, I go right into the project. I pull out the supplies and go for it. Some of the sketches are in journals but most are on those little scraps of paper.

I also get my color inspirations from flowers so I have lots of floral paintings, some which I have done are up on my walls. I have glass and gemstone bonsai around and every room around me has some sort of floral arrangement.

Do you listen to music in your studio? What kind?
No, music.
I have a musical theatre background and I'll focus on the music instead of my work. Instead, I listen to politics on the television or put in a relaxing movie that I have seen hundreds of times that I can listen to without distracting me. I do however listen to music throughout the day which does inspire some of my pieces.

Thanks Sonny!
